Wounds and Lacerations
Infections in lacerations or wounds are largely preventable with proper care, which can also speed the healing process.
To care for a wound: • Keep the wound and the surrounding area clean and dry at all times. • Remove any crusting, and clean the area with mild soap and water. • Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment to facial lacerations only. • Shower and bathe as desired but do not rub the injured area. • If a tetanus shot was administered, keep record of it for future reference.
Leave dressings and bandages off unless: • Clothing irritates the area. • The patient will not leave the wound alone. • The patient works in an unclean environment.
Watch for the following signs of infection, and seek medical attention immediately if they appear: • Increased pain, swelling, tenderness and/or redness around the wound. • The wound becomes warm to the touch. • There is a lot of drainage from the wound.
